Amal Ayurveda Clinic is located in south Kerala. The climate here is subtropical with alternating rainy monsoon and dry periods. As the tourist destination Kerala is best to visit between November and March when weather is dry and not extremely hot. Often, staying here during monsoon in August and September could be also very nice with some raining during the day and longer sunny periods. However, swimming in the sea is normally not possible during these months and there is possibility for longer rainy periods when tourist activities are difficult. According to traditional Indian astrology the month of Karkidakam (i.e. period between August and September) is the time when Ayurveda treatments provide the biggest help.
There are many tourist attractions in the close vicinity of the clinic and many more within one day trip radius from the clinic.Here we present below only a few suggestions hoping to inspire some of our guests.
Balaramapuram, the closest destination to the clinic, is a market town well known for the handloom textiles. Handloom term describes traditionally manufactured high quality cotton textiles which still enjoy popularity among customers preferring natural organic materials.
Up to the 80s it was a natural wonder of an emerald sea and beautiful beaches. Small hotels and restaurants under straw roofs were scattered among plantations of coconut trees and rice paddies. Today, this early innocence is replaced by convenience of good hotels, beach front restaurants, bed and umbrellas on the beach and a walking promenade. However, the sea is the same, the beaches are kept clean and it is still the best place for swimming, surfing or simply playing with the waves.
A few kilometers south of Kovalam there is a string of luxury tourist’s resorts which overlook very picturesque beaches.
It is an artificial lake created by construction of a dam. The surrounding forest contains a wild life sanctuary. What makes it unique is the project of breathing in it the endangered species of crocodiles. There is a crocodile farm where young crocodiles are kept before being released into freedom.
The Sivananda Yoga Clinic is located on the shore of the Neyyar Dam Lake in a beautiful surrounding. There is possibility to arrange a visit there or even spent a day to have a taste of life in a yoga clinic.
Trivandrum (official name Thiruvananthapuram) is the capital city of Kerala with 3.1 million inhabitants. It is a busy and steady growing city offering a rich mixture of tourist attractions, like historic buildings, art museum and galleries, choice of festivals, shopping, etc.
This famous temple is still controlled by the family of former rulers of Travancore. The temple is considered the wealthiest in India due to a huge ancient treasure discovered in the hidden underground chambers in 2011.
Palace was the seat of former rulers of Travancore which was till the independence of India a separate kingdom in the area which is currently the southern part of Kerala.
Festival of classic Indian music takes place in January in the old maharaja palace. Nishagandhi Festival - an ambitious event intended to entertain the Keralis as well as the tourists. It takes place at the end of January in the museum area. It promotes Indian culture, traditional and modern, and is accompanied by the food festival and fair of selected local crafts.
There are plenty of festivals taking place in different temples accompanied by traditional attractions like distributing free delicacies among visitors, display of a big number of splendidly adorned elephants, young men performing rites of piercing their cheeks with swords and walking ankle deep in burning coals without hurting themselves, etc. These festivals are not listed in any tourist guides and only local inhabitants could inform and lead you to them.
Trivandrum Museum complex contains a ZOO, the main museum building with a rare collection of art artifacts dating from ancient times till contemporary days on display and a painting gallery showing broad spectrum of works by Indian and international artist, among them from famous painters like Raja Ravi Varma and Nicholas Roerich.
It is a charming bazar where all kind of fruits, vegetables and spices can be found. Juveliers, kitchen accesoirs, shoes, etc. are sold in stores lining the narrow streets of the bazar. Restaurants offering good food, refreshments and sweets are located there.
Short one or day long travels by boats go across a landscape of numerous lakes and lagoons interconnected with channels. Backwaters are stretching for miles and miles. Boats are passing small hamlets and villages located on the shores.
This is another famous place on the Arabian See located on the steep cliff and offering a magnificent view on the beaches and sea.
This is the biggest city in Kerala with an enormous harbor and a picturesque old city district, Fort Cochin.
Western Ghats is a mountain range and home to the huge diversity of plants and animals. The parts which are cultivated contain rich plantations of tea, coffee and different spices. Thekkady is a wild life sancturay inhabited many arts of wild animals with elephants and tigers among them.
